Slight Delay with Surveys
over 4 years ago – Tue, Oct 08, 2019 at 02:31:50 AM

Hey everyone!

We will have a slight delay sending the surveys out to collect your addresses and add-ons. Representatives from Backerkit are running some checks before the survey links get e-mailed to you. This is just a precaution to make sure there are no glitches or errors when the surveys actually get sent out.

(Better we take a little time now to prevent errors later!)

The surveys will still be sent out later this week. If you need something to do in the meantime, you can go listen to the interview that Mike had about sketchnoting on the Focused Podcast or go check out his Inktober sketches on Instagram.

Again, apologies for the delay!

Backerkit Surveys on Tues Oct 8th + Bonus #1: The Icon Library!
over 4 years ago – Sat, Oct 05, 2019 at 09:54:00 PM

Hello Backers!

It’s been a week since The Sketchnote Ideabook campaign was funded and we've been busy finalizing future shipping costs, creating the Backerkit surveys, and assembling the add-on store where we hope you'll be able to you create your own perfect sketchnoting package.

We will be sending those surveys out next Tuesday, October 8th, so look for another update with specific details on that.

BONUS #1: The Icon Library

Ever since the campaign funded on Launch Day in only 5 hours, we've been pondering ways to not only give back to our awesome Backers, but also add value to The Sketchnote Ideabook.

This first feature should help make this notebook even more useful to sketchnoters and visual note takers. We call it the Icon Library.

Icon Library: Large Size
Icon Library: Small Size
Perforated pages you can remove, if you wish.
Use the Icon Library to create or capture new icons for your library!
Collect your final icons in the small icon library sheets.

At the end of every Sketchnote Ideabook there will be an additional 16 pages (8 sheets, printed front and back) designed to give you a place to create & store your own visual vocabulary!

Here's a video to help explain how to use the Icon Library sheets:

And in case you like sweating the details along with us, here's a full description of what the Icon Library sheets are:

  • 8 perforated sheets of bright white 160 gsm paper added will be included in the back of every Sketchnote Ideabook. You can leave those sheets bound in the book, or take them out as you please.
  • 2 sheets have large size icon references with 6 icons per side (front and back) to help you explore your icon ideas at a larger scale.
  • 1 sheet has small icon references with 20 icons per side (front and back), designed for finished icons in your visual library.
  • 1 sheet is blank and can be used as a slip sheet for your those really inky alcohol based markers (we're looking at you Sharpie & Copic!).

Creating your own icon library is a fundamental part of sketchnoting, giving you a visual vocabulary to store and explain your ideas through sketching.  Just remember, they don't have to look pretty! The important thing is to store your ideas... not make them works of art. *ahem*

We hope you enjoy this first added feature! We hope to roll out some Kickstarter-only bonuses over the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Thank you all!

Sketchnote Ideabook Kickstarter: Ending at 11:59 PM CT Tonight, what happens next?
over 4 years ago – Fri, Sep 27, 2019 at 07:48:37 PM

Hey Amazing Backers!

We're over $40,000 pledged and 1,000 backers! You're truly amazing!

Because you guys are so awesome, Mike and I wanted to send a message well ahead of the Sketchnote Ideabook Kickstarter campaign closing, so you have a heads up on the next steps in the process.

We know there are quite a few first-time Kickstarter backers here, and we wanted to clearly share what to expect with you and everyone else.

Remember that if you have any questions, we are here to help you. Reply to this message in the comments area, or send us an email at [email protected] with your questions. It's just Mike Schiano and me here, so we will do our best to answer as fast as we can. :-)

Okay, here we go.

What happens tonight at midnight?

Once the campaign concludes tonight at 11:59 PM US Central Time, Kickstarter will process and lock your order. You will receive a receipt of your order to your registered email address.

If your payment method fails, we will not be able to send you a link to access the pledge manager (this will be sent a few days after campaign close). If you do not have this pledge manager link you won't be able to provide us with your shipping details. Please make sure you entered the correct payment details when you originally chose your tier.

In the case that payment fails for any reason, you must update the payment information in your Kickstarter profile to a valid card. We will then attempt to charge you again in a few days, at that point, if your payment is successful you will receive an emailed receipt.

How will we collect your address?

We use BackerKit as our pledge manager. Once your Kickstarter payment has been collected, you will receive a survey link from us via BackerKit to the email address you have registered with Kickstarter (you remember what that is, don't you?). That's where you can provide us with your shipping address, so we know where to send your Sketchnote Ideabook(s) and to calculate shipping costs.

What about add-on items?

Glad you asked! The link we send via BackerKit will also provide you access to our a la carte store that you can use to include the below add-on items to your order. If you do end up including any of the items, your cart will show you the updated additional cost for your order of add-on items only (not previous pledge). If you don't add any of the add-on items, you will owe no extra money during checkout.

We will be offering these items to add on to your order if you wish:

  • Sketchnote Ideabooks in 1, 3, 6 and 12-Packs
  • 10 Packs of Airship Pens. Each pen has a different line width
  • The Sketchnote Webinar
  • The Sketchnote Typeface
  • The Sketchnote Handbook as downloadable, watermarked PDF
  • The Sketchnote Workbook as a downloadable, watermarked PDF

Bonus! If you are a backer of any kind — including $1 backers or select your own price backers — you will have access to the BackerKit add-on items listed above!

What about shipping costs?

You might wonder why we didn't build shipping into the cost of the Sketchnote Ideabook pledge tier pricing. We chose this approach to save backers money on shipping.

Rather than try and guess shipping costs before we had backers (which meant guessing high to cover costs and charging you, the backer, those higher prices) we chose to wait to see who actually backed the project so we could find the best pricing for you, our actual backers.

This approach makes the shipping costs better for almost everyone. In some cases, there are a few countries, like Switzerland and Norway that simply had very high shipping costs regardless of the carrier we looked into. Based on backer numbers, Mike Schiano found the best balance for the most backers.

More shipping details, if you're into that: We contacted multiple fulfillment providers to compare prices and weigh the costs and benefits of each. We chose Quartermaster Logistics, which some of you Superbackers might recognize from other Kickstarters. They have made a name for themselves in this age of crowdfunding fulfillment and they will help us ensure your pledge rewards make it to you.

Quartermaster will work with us to handle 1st Line Customer Support for the duration of the campaign (answering questions related to shipping, tracking, etc.) so the shipping process is smooth and efficient.

Alternate Addresses

You may provide whatever address you wish your order to be sent to. If sending your package to Great Aunt Ethyl saves you some costs, we're cool with that, as long as it is a legitimately shippable address... and you are willing to have tea and biscuits with Great Aunt Ethyl to retrieve your package.

Shipping Rate Table

Below is a table of the shipping rates for each region. The rates are based on:

  • The regions we are able to ship to based on the number of backers in each region.
  • The weight and volume of each shipment, which is why we provide separate shipping estimates for the 1-pack, 3-pack, 6-pack and 12-pack. BTW, these sketchbooks are not light.

All prices are provided in United States Dollars. If you end up adding more items after the campaign via BackerKit, that will adjust these shipping estimates. These are only estimates and are subject to change, though we are hoping that they will be as close to the actual rates as possible.

Shipping Rates for The Sketchnote Ideabook (provided in the Sketchnote Typeface)
  •  US Rates are only for the contiguous lower 48 states.
  •  Alaska and Hawaii: Those locations have a separate cost chart from the lower 48 states. They will ship via USPS, while the Lower 48 states will receive shipping via FedEx SmartPost. Quartermaster Logistics ships out so many packages via FedEx that they get a discounted rate, which is why the Lower 48 costs are less than the Alaska/Hawaii costs.
  •  Military/APO territories: Please contact us and we’ll get shipping rates calculated for you ASAP.
  •  EU & UK Includes: United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech, Denmark, Estonia,  Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia,  Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania,  Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden
  •  Switzerland & Norway: Yes we know those shipping costs are insane, but they were expensive any way Mike tried to have them shipped to those locations. These backers may require an "Aunt Ethyl" option (see notes on the Aunt Ethyl option under Alternate Addresses).
  •  Rest of Asia Includes: Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam
  •  Rest of the World Includes: Any country not listed above.

We will have Customs Friendly Shipping to US, Canada, EU/UK,  Australia, and China backers. If you are not part of these regions,  there may be customs fees associated with shipping to your country that you will need to pay. This is described more in the campaign description (scroll to the bottom) and in the FAQs.

Other shipping notes: Please know that we have absorbed as much of the shipping costs as we possibly can while still offering the Sketchnote Ideabooks to you at such Backer-discounted rates through Kickstarter. Does that mean we are paying for a little part of your shipping costs because we love our Backers? Yes. Yes, it does.

What about delivery?

Our goal is to get these shipments to all of our backers before Christmas. There are many moving parts, but Mike Schiano at Airship Notebooks is an expert in these matters with 6 years experience forming relationships and delivering thousands of notebooks to customers.

If something unforeseen delays us, we will tell you ASAP. We don't foresee anything happening, but if anything does (knock on wood) we will tell you first. Our goal is to keep in regular communication with you as these sketchbooks are created, with some fun updates, videos, etc.

What if you have questions?

We are here for you. Reach out to us via the comments on this message at Kickstarter (down below), or email us at [email protected] and we will work to get you the information you need.

Thanks again for your support — we can't wait for you to enjoy these sketchbooks!
